Chunking Down the 21st Century
Love in Transition Volumes VI-VIII

             Some studies under way (in media res), On Some Chaotic and Human Behavior Patterns, anticipating the (1974) Flea Essay Comments[1] (early, fore-running the formal presentations in Chaos Theory to the General Public). Back then, in 1974, a little-known study of a chaotic theme—threading its way through Christopher Smart, William Blake, Russian history, AND SCIENCE TOO—was never properly responded to, because when it was published there was no general public knowledge of the CHAOS PRINCIPLE, which it was published ON AND THROUGH.

             Having mastered 2-dimensional dynamics, the Earth was able to state it dynamically, AT THE SAME TIME it considered itself 3-dimensional. That is, the three-dimensionality, that it observed physically (measured), as length, depth, height, it did not interact in, measurably. That is, Newton stated the principle of the astronomical 2-body motion: how one center serves for TWO. But what happens when a third enters? As interaction was 2-dimensional, while measurement was 3-dimensional, on the perspective of solid form, these were two different factors and issues. But they indicated that the 3-dimensionality of unmoving form (for if it moved, conceivably its form would shift in some way with the motion or something WOULD HAPPEN TO IT) could be placed into 2-dimensional motion. That was 3-dimensional shape in motion.

            To go further, starting from where Newton did, in dynamics of transformation, BRINGING IN ALCHEMICAL concepts of attraction, would open up a whole new field. But the field as presented allowed time for the mind and mentality of values and consciousness of what one truly did to be measured as well, in steps that kept up. We had a medieval mind giving way to a Renaissance mind, that to a rationality oriented mind, that provided a stepping stone to a technological mind. And now we receive the first inklings of the systems that cut through all these systems, showing their CHAOTIC  SIDE.

            So to imagine the [Romanian] cave image also a cross-section (even imagining it not), one could begin to reconstruct (or construct in the present time) the consciousness, or a consciousness:

            The central circle [in the cave drawing]—calling it the Earth—would be perfectly balanced by a wavy line, indicating two forms opposed in form or principle, but dynamically separated in that the line is wavy, though unbroken. And also each side, perfectly the same in size and form—conservation of balance—has the same size hole in it, the hole outward or inward, that keeps it from being a Closed System, and that lets the opposite perspective or the higher or lower have a toehold in. The door is not shut to the other side, even if the size of the opening is minute relative to the total size of the side. Then add in the backgrounding star. Suppose this is, as in times of star worship, the background, the internal condition, the precondition, and the backgrounding model. That is, the star consciousness takes internally the pattern of oppositional balance, and here we start with male-female. And once understanding and mastering any oppositional balance, we can use the principle, such as to balance the mind-matter principle, taking it into the oppositional-balance principles, and not seeing it in isolation from them. Thus, Pythagorean, if you will. Or universally minded, on the first steps.

Phoenician beliefs (Dictionary of Religions, ed. by John R. Hinnells, p. 382):

           "Little was known of the mythology and religious beliefs of the people of Syria-Palestine in early times, until the excavations of a large area of the Syrian coastal town of Ras Shamra (Ugarit) were undertaken, when a wealth of documentary evidence was discovered. Cuneiform texts in Ugaritic contained mythological and liturgical information, and threw light on the less well attested sources on Phoenician religion . . .  , such as the Phoenikike Historia, attributed to the priest Sanchuniathon, whose dates are disputed but who was reputed to have lived before the Trojan war."

p. 382:

            "It seems that there was a priestly hierarchy at Ugarit, and that Babylonian divination and magico-medical texts . . . had been absorbed into the religion.

            "The mythology included an important legend, found in several Near Eastern religions, which sought  to explain the annual death and revival of the vegetation . . . , but there is no literary indication that survival after death was part of their belief . . . However, most graves were supplied with goods and the family vaults below the houses at Ugarit were furnished and provisioned by relatives. They poured libations down a clay pipe, which ran vertically from ground level to a receptacle below, to which the dead had access through a window cut in the vault . . . [emphasis added]" 

            Which old cults did the man at the window [in starting this series of books, in Paris, where he made signs across the plate glass] use, and how many clues were enough? A man signaling through a window (which references), a beggar with French bread (which references), a mouth moving along the wall—making mime signs of up-and-down motion (which memories), and finally the request for a cigarette (could it have been anything, that used light? was it significant that the Dome was SETTING THE STAGE???).

            And so we took this perplexity, this initial condition, with us—into the TURBULENT STAGE. What initial condition, taken THRU a shift of degree, a shift of its initial form, its geography, but the geographies unmentioned, kept in referential mode—what shift of all this, in some phase-space language, in which the 3 dimensions of the location, easily plotted, met the "plot of plots," not mentioned as leading outward into its unfolding. Or, in this category of language, its passage through

James Gleick: Chaos: Making a New Science, p. 127:

             "The march of phase space research had proceeded along stepping stones of analogy: a nonmagnet-magnet phase transition proved to be like a liquid-vapor phase transition. The fluid-superfluid phase transition proved to be like the conductor-superconductor phase transition. The mathematics on one experiment applied to many other experiments. By the 1970s the problem had been largely solved. A question, though, was how far the theory could be extended. What other changes in the world, when examined closely, would prove to be phase transitions?"

p. 125:

 "In the decades  since World War II, as physics came to be defined by the study of fundamental particles, the best publicized experiments were those carried out with particle accelerators. Spin, symmetry, color, flavor—these were the glamorous abstractions. To most laymen following science, and to more than a few scientists, the study of atomic particles was physics. But studying smaller particles, on shorter time scales, meant higher levels of energy. So the machinery needed for good experiments grew with the years, and the nature of experimentation changed for good in particle physics."

pp. 126:

 "It was then that he began talking to an older physicist starting to work on phase transitions—changes from solid to liquid, from nonmagnet to magnet, from conductor to superconductor. Before long [Harry] Swinney had an empty room—not much bigger than a closet, but it was his alone [as graduate student at Johns Hopkins]. He had an equipment catalogue, and he began ordering. Soon he had a tale and a laser and some refrigerating equipment and some probes. He designed an apparatus to measure how well carbon dioxide conducted heat around the critical point where it turned from vapor to liquid. Most people thought that the thermal conductivity would change slightly. Swinney found that it changed by a factor of 1,000. That was exciting—alone in a tiny room, discovering something that no one else knew. He saw the other-worldly light that shines from a vapor, any vapor, near the critical point, the light called 'opalescence' because the soft scattering of rays gives the white glow of an opal.

            "Like so much of chaos itself, phase transitions involve a kind of macroscopic behavior that seems hard to predict by looking at the microscopic details. When a solid is heated, its molecules vibrate with the added energy. They push outward against their bonds and force the substance to expand. the more heat, the more expansion. Yet at a certain temperature and pressure, the change becomes sudden and discontinuous. A rope has been stretching; now it breaks. Crystalline form dissolves, and the molecules slide away from one another. They obey fluid laws that could not have been inferred from any aspect of the solid. The average atomic energy has barely changed, but the material—now a liquid, or a magnet, or a superconductor—has a new realm.

            "Gunter Ahlers, at AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, had examined the so-called superfluid transition in liquid helium, in which, as temperature falls, the material becomes a sort of magical flowing liquid with no perceptible viscosity or friction. Others had studied superconductivity. Swinney had studied the critical point where matter changes between liquid and vapor. Swinney, Ahlers, Pierre Berge, Jerry Golub, Marzio Giglio—by the middle of the 1970s these experimenters and others in the United States, France, Italy, all from the young tradition exploring phase transitions, were looking for new problems. As intimately as a mail carrier learns the stoops and alleys of his neighborhood, they had learned the peculiar signposts of substances changing their fundamental state. They had studied a brink upon which matter stands poised."

Gleick, pp. 124-125:

 "Water courses through a pipe, or around a cylinder, making a faint smooth hiss. In your mind, you turn up the pressure. A back-and-forth rhythm begins. Like a wave, it knocks slowly against the pipe. Turn the knob again. From somewhere, a second frequency enters, out of synchronization with the first. The rhythms overlap, compete, jar against one another. Already they create such a complicated motion, waves banging against the walls, interfering with one another, that you almost cannot follow it. Now turn up the knob again. A third frequency enters, then a fourth, a fifth, a sixth, all incommensurate. The flow has become extremely complicated. Perhaps this is turbulence. Physicists accepted this picture, but no one had any idea how to predict when an increase in energy would create a new frequency, or what the new frequency would be. No one had seen these mysteriously arriving frequencies in an experiment because, in fact, no one had ever tested [ the Russian scientist Lev. D.] Landau's theory of the onset of turbulence."

            If some people put activities INTO THE WORLD, and some people put TENDENCIES
(frequencies), we are at the borders of a new world. The tendencies/frequencies come in the form of the tendency of a straight line to continue as a straight line (in the motion of an uninterfered-with force set in motion) and from the fact that patterns, combinations of lines held together by an action or a thought that holds together, can exist in any dimension and strength, and multiplication of the simplicity of the single form, or combination into a new single form, or force. So some people put tendenciesinto the world—without moving at all. In fact, it can be that an acted-out tendency has someone else as the origin of much of its source. Its force may come at the second point—where action is the result. But thinking broadly, a tendency to action—or tendency of a particular type—may be the work of activity inside the unconscious or inside the silent strings that shape the form of the earth thought. Even the archetypes before they are set into motion, or set, like stars into the heavens, on Earth "course" and in Earth-felt or –related mental systems. Thus, there can be interference with or background support of The Earth Consciousness. Star-worship sensed this. Partly in dreams, partly in attraction of the mind that did not hold such elements as rationality in this much force, and so the force of attraction of qualities like awe and wonder created star worship through star attraction, which was of the vibrational nature and "course."

            I have been told not to go out much: that this is time of Great Shift. That is, of turbulence, and to get caught in a collective motion will be not to see and feel the motion I am most drawn to, usually. That is, IT TOO IS IN MOTION and motive-ated.

            The dream, coming after the sense of the message: I cannot make my way through the doorways, out to where a group is going, two times. I cannot, because my eyes go suddenly almost blind—in the sense that I cannot open them. Perhaps the correlation to opening them and finding the universe on them. This coordinate has been activated, shutting my eyes. With my eyes shut, I cannot find the wall, even feeling the walls, to the door to join them in time. This happens twice, and I realize and feel it is not a deprivation but a guidance, from myself, that I am not to learn this material through that talk and introduction, but through some other method, which will open my eyes to the material in its own way and time. So I must guard the space, to keep it empty and uninstructed. It will keep out of the turbulence the other would produce, invisibly for a time. BUT IT IS STARTING NOW. I must not join in, but be kept un-Instructed. Thus, with totally different way in, not necessarily cancel out what the others are learning, but get there from a different beginning, so that what I bring will have come through me.

            Or maybe the word is "from." Come "from" some other source.

            The [total] eclipse period ends. I feel the destruction of the [printouts in the] pages has too. That another alignment has come in. And the destruction preceding the eclipse was for the purpose of reaching it purely. With all holding-on resigned. So that what it wants to connect through—not knowing what that would be—will be considered AN ACCEPTED ROOT. That is, the "core" belief will be met with objectivity, be that whatever it is. And the re-creating going on in the soul grouping I connect to, however far away and out of form, by choice, or necessity— That re-creating, I will meet properly by the only tool I have: NOT holding on blindly, but refinding after each bombing [of the book format] what had to remain and using this new sensory capacity to know what it is. That is, refining attraction techniques.

Gleick, p. 137:

            "A physicist had good reason to dislike a model that found so little clarity in nature. Using the nonlinear equations of fluid motion, the world's fastest supercomputers were incapable of accurately tracking a turbulent flow of even a cubic centimeter for more than a few seconds. The blame for this was certainly  nature's more than Laudau's, but even so the Landau picture went against the grain. . . . The great quantum theorist Richard P. Feynman expressed this feeling. 'It always bothers me that, according to the laws as we understand them today, it takes a computing machine an infinite number of logical operations to figure out what goes on in no matter how tiny a region of space, and no matter how tiny a region of time. How can all that be going on in that tiny space? Why should it take an infinite amount of logic to figure out what on tiny piece of space/time is going to do.'"

             "An attractor can be a single point. For a pendulum steadily losing energy to friction, all trajectories spiral inward toward a point that represents a steady state—in this case, the steady state of no motion at all [p. 138, fig.]."

             "Like so many of those who began studying chaos, David Ruelle suspected that the visible patterns in turbulent flow—self-entangled stream lines, spiral vortices, whorls that rise before the eye and vanish again—must reflect patterns explained by laws not yet discovered. . . .

            "In the short term any point in phase space can stand for a possible behavior of the dynamical system. In the long term the only possible behaviors are the attractors themselves. Other kinds of motion are transient. By definition, attractors had the important property of stability—in real system, where moving parts are subject to bumps and jiggles from the real-world noise, motion tends to return to the attractor. A bump may shove a trajectory away for a brief time, but the resulting transient motions die out. Even if the cat knocks into it, a pendulum clock does not switch to a sixty-two-second minute."
